Dr. Cosmetis offers several groups and classes, which can be used as an adjunct to individual therapy, or they can be used on their own for those seeking to build their skills in a specific area. In order to facilitate a safe, intimate, and supportive environment, class size is limited to 6-8 participants. Depending on class size and availability, Dr. Cosmetis may be able to offer partial scholarship for those in financial need.
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
MBCT is based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale adapted the MBSR program to help people who suffer repeated bouts of depression and chronic unhappiness. It combines concepts from cognitive behavioral therapy with meditative practices in effort to teach participants to become more acquainted with their own minds and develop a more compassionate and nonjudgmental stance. This is an 8-week course, with the skills learned each week building off the previous week. Thus, it is highly recommended to attend all 8 weeks if possible. Classes are 90 minutes. Please call Dr. Cosmetis to inquire about the dates and times of the next course offering.
Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP)
MBRP was developed at the Addictive Behaviors Research Center at the University of Washington for individuals in recovery for addictive behaviors. MBRP integrates mindfulness meditation practices with cognitive-behavioral strategies to support recovery. Participants learn to recognize and stay with discomfort (physical, cognitive and emotional) as opposed to automatically giving in to their craving with the usual habit (i.e. alcohol, food, shopping, etc.). MBSR teaches heightened awareness of both internal and external triggers, while promoting vital lifestyle modifications for a healthy life of recovery. This is an 8-week course, with the skills learned each week building off the previous week. Thus, it is highly recommended to attend all 8 weeks if possible. Classes are 90 minutes. Please call Dr. Cosmetis to inquire about the dates and times of the next course offering.
In this class, mindful eating concepts and meditations will be taught, in addition to providing participants a safe place to discuss their successes and challenges in reaching their goals. Mindful eating is not a diet, nor does it encourage you to give up eating your favorite foods. Instead, it teaches you to make choices in beginning or ending a meal based on awareness of hunger and satiety cues; to identify personal triggers for mindless eating, such as emotions, social pressures, or certain foods; and to value quality over quantity of what you’re eating. This is a 4-week group, with the skills learned building off the previous weeks. Classes are 60 minutes. Please call Dr. Cosmetis to inquire about the dates and times of the next course offering.
